Military Benefits

Speech@NYU welcomes military members and their families to our online master of science program in Communicative Sciences and Disorders. Through a combination of live, online classes; engaging course work; and local field placements, the program enables active-duty service members, veterans, and their dependents to receive a comprehensive graduate education and pursue licensure as speech-language pathologists.

While military education benefits may vary based on each student’s circumstances, one benefit is common to all veterans and military service members: the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits to veterans who have at least 90 days of active duty service after September 10, 2001.

  • Through the Yellow Ribbon Program, the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) matches each dollar of unmet charges that NYU agrees to contribute to a student’s education, up to the cost of tuition and fees.
    • For example, if NYU offers $10,000, the VA will match $10,000 for a total award of $20,000.
    • The amount awarded is determined by the amount of other benefits provided to an eligible student. Students may not be eligible for the maximum amount each year.
    • The Transfer of Entitlement Option enables service members to transfer all or some unused benefits to a spouse or dependent children. There are many factors to consider when seeking this type of assistance, such as the nature of transfer, reallocation of benefits, and marriage and divorce.
  • Dependents’ Educational Assistance provides educational financial assistance to survivors and dependents of veterans through two programs:
    • The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship)
    • The Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) Program

Additional Considerations

As you explore the military education benefits that may be available to you, keep the following information in mind:

  • Financial aid and scholarships cannot exceed a student’s cost of attendance.
  • To begin the process of applying for military education benefits, complete the Education Benefits Application Process on the VA website.
  • The Education Benefits Application generates a request for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Once you have been approved for educational benefits, the VA will mail the COE to you within six to eight weeks of completion of the application. The NYU Office of the Registrar and the NYU Certifying Officials will need copies of your COE and Discharge Documents (DD214) to process your eligible benefits.
